Steel Shoot at the Carmi Rifle Club. The new shooting sport is a big hit with competitors

from all across southern Illinois and Indiana.

Steel Shoot

NEW SHOOTING SPORT OFF TO A GREAT START

Shooters from across southern Illinois and Indiana have set the standard for Carmi Rifle Club's new shooting venue - the Steel Shoot.  Steel shooting is a new handgun shooting sport which combines accuracy and speed. This action packed sport consists of hitting five 10-inch and 12-inch round steel targets and an 18x24 inch square plate set at distances of 7 to 20 yards.  Participants are scored on the time it takes them to shoot all five targets.

The event included two stages of five targets each with the shooter starting from the holster or low ready position.  Each shooter fired four relays at each of the two stages with a minimum of 40 rounds fired over all.  The three fastest times from each stage were averaged and added together fastest time overall won in each category.  Categories included Single Stack using model 1911 semi-automatic handguns, Production using regular stock guns, Revolver, and Rimfire.

Steel Challenge

NEW SPORT COMES TO CARMI RIFLE CLUB

Saturday, Oct.31st Carmi Rifle Club will be hosting its very first steel shoot, a new handgun shooting sport

which combines accuracy and speed. This action packed sport consists of hitting five 10-inch and 12-inch

round steel targets and a 18x24 inch square plate set at distances of  7 to 20 yards.  Participants are scored

on the time it takes them to shoot all five targets.  The last target shot, the 18x24 target, is called the

"stop plate" which stops the timer.  Shooters must hit all five targets and each shot over five incurs

a half second penalty.

The event will include two stages of five targets each with the shooter starting from the holster or low ready

position.  Each shooter will fire four relays at each of the two stages with a minimum of 40 rounds fired

over all.  The three fastest times from each stage will averaged - fastest time wins!  This is fast paced

adrenalin packed fun for the whole family. Categories will include centerfire open sights, centerfire optics

and rimfire open sights, rimfire optics.

Cost is $5.00 per shooter per two-stage game and is open to the public. All persons on the range must

wear eye and ear protection and must bring their own ammo and handguns.

The event will run from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. and will be supervised by certified range safety officers.

For more information please contact Todd Maricle at 618-384-7524.

Carmi Rifle Club Adds Five New

Range Safety Officers to Its Ranks

Carmi Rifle Club is proud to add five new Range Safety Officers certified by the National Rifle Association to its list of

members/volunteers.  Jon Westfall, David and Glenda McTaggart, Todd Maricle, and Mike Hetzel all participated in the

Range Safety Officer Training conducted by the Heartland Training team at the Williamson County Gun Club in

Carterville, IL.

All five completed the required nine hours of intensive training which included instruction on the role of NRA Range

Safety Officers, range standard operating procedures, range inspections, range rules, conducting range safety briefings,

emergency procedures, firearm stoppages and malfunctions.

Range Safety Officers supervise shooting activities according to range rules, maintain order on the range, and ensure

shooters follow the range regulations and safety rules.

Adding these new Range Safety Officers to the Carmi Rifle Club team will make it possible for the club to offer

additional safe and fun shooting venues such as the new and exciting shooting sport called Steel Challenge which

utilizes steel targets and speed shooting. Such an event is being developed by Todd Maricle and Mike Hetzel and is

expected to be held in the near future.

CARMI RIFLE CLUB TO HOST

APPLESEED RIFLE MARKSMANSHIP PROGRAM

SAT. SEPT 12-13, 2009

Greg Harris of the Revolutionary War Veteran’s Association took notice when he saw an article in the Evansville Press about the Carmi Rifle Club’s recent NRA Youth Shooting Camp.  Greg is an instructor with the Appleseed Project which is a traveling rifle marksmanship program founded and run by the RWVA.

Seeing that the Carmi Rifle Club is dedicated to introducing new shooters to the shooting sports and to providing educational/training opportunities to the community, Mr. Harris approached the club about bringing the Appleseed Project to the Carmi area.  After hearing Mr. Harris’s presentation and looking into the program the board agreed it was a good fit and in keeping with the club’s mission.

What is the Appleseed Project?  It is a two day rifle marksmanship training program that includes a healthy dose of American history and the marksmanship traditions upon which America was founded. The Appleseed Project is a nationally recognized program and participation in one of the events fulfills CMP requirements necessary for purchasing firearms through the Civilian Marksmanship Program.

Women, young people under the age of 21, and current military, guard and reserve all shoot FREE!  The fee for other adults is $40 per day or $70 for both days.

For more information about Appleseed Project please go to www.appleseedinfo.org.

For more information about the Carmi, IL Appleseed shoot please go here.

Club Member and Son Travel to Front Sight

in Vegas for Training

By Ray Scudamore

About a year ago, the IL Rifle News informed us that Front Sight of Las Vegas was offering a Four Day Handgun Training and One Day Concealed Carry Course with a Free Handgun for a special price. I investigated it and last September I went there for the training and now have a concealed carry permit good for over 30 states.

My son Shular and I went there in June to take training in different courses offered. Shular took the Four Day Handgun training and I signed up for the Four Day Practical Rifle Course. He found the training conducted by professional instructors to be very thorough and learned to be a better handgun shooter. The training is very intense but non military style. Some 700 plus rounds fired in the four days. Much infuse is placed on self and family defense. Their motto is, “Any gun will do if you will do”. The training received is appreciated very much.

The Four Day Practical Rifle Course was also presented by professional instructors. All guns remain unloaded unless instructed to load while on the line of fire and always pointed down range. I was at a disadvantage with a bolt action rifle with no removable magazine. Many students were using semiautomatic AR'S, AK47's or other semi automatic rifles with removable magazines which left bolt action rifles at a disadvantage. Also the wind was very rough and my eyes glassed over to a point which I was unable to participate in the entire course. The first aid individual told me the pollen count was the highest level it had ever been which also caused some of my eye problems.

Shular and I would like to go back in the future for more training. Front Sight offers many different courses. If any one is interested in more information, they should contact me for more information.
